ZACK SMITH - Center - 31 - $3.25MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 6/20/19
One of the last remaining veterans of the Senators' run to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2017, Zack Smith has always been a responsible, physical center in Ottawa. While his 25 goal season in 2015-16 was certainly a mirage, driven by an unsustainable 20.7% shooting percentage, Smith is still capable of ~30 points with about 10 of those being goals. His contract isn't ideal, and him clearing waivers last season is evidence of that, but given his defensive record and willingness to play a physical brand of hockey, it's not unreasonable to expect Smith to be a good 4th line center or low-end 3rd line center for next season. While his physical style may mean a rapid decline is just around the corner, that physicality also means he's versatile and should be able to bring value even with very limited ice time. But with that contract Smith is a negative-value asset at this point in time.
