ZACK KASSIAN - Right Winger - 28 - $1.95MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 6/23/19
While he's battled off-ice issues for most of his career, it seems like Kassian has finally settled in as a regular in Edmonton. Kassian is the type of player whose value greatly fluctuates depending on how he's feeling and the game he's playing in. In certain games, his aggressive style will pay huge dividends, and he'll be flying around the ice, knocking in some major hits, scoring some clutch goals, and genuinely making an impact and making his presence known every time he hops over the bench. In certain games, he seems like the dynamic, aggressive, good-shooting power forward he was drafted to be. Unfortunately, though, it's his inconsistency that keeps him from becoming that star. For every game where he plays to his draft position, Kassian has games where he takes bad penalties, struggles to create offense, and has bad defensive lapses. If a coach can get into his head and help sort out whatever's going on there to get more consistency from him, Kassian can be a truly valuable asset, but until that happens his inconsistency will always hold him back. At this point, he's best suited on a third or fourth line where his more limited ice time keeps him fresh and ensures his energy has a maximum positive impact on the team.
