WAYNE SIMMONDS - Right Winger - 30 - $5.00MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
Whereas Wayne Simmonds used to be one of the league's premier power forwards, the wear-and-tear his body has accumulated over eleven seasons of rough and tumble hockey seems to have finally gotten to him. Before, Simmonds would be able to use his skating, physicality, and relentless motor to score 30+ goals and 60+ points. Now, though, his foot speed has dried up, his hands aren't what they once were, and a significantly faster NHL than the one he spent most of his career him seems to have gotten the better of him. He was a bad fit in Nashville and had to settle for a one year prove-it deal in free agency with the Devils. Now, I still think Simmonds has offensive value and the versatility to play in a bottom-6 role if he isn't scoring. Simmonds is still a major asset on the power play where he can park himself in front of the net and get the "garbage goals" he's famous for. Scoring like that at even strength is more of an issue because he can't just park himself as a screener nearly as often as he can with the man advantage, hurting his value in 5v5 play. Outside of his offense, Simmonds brings value through his physicality. There are few players who can match Simmonds' track record of rough, physical play over the past decade. If he's not scoring, he can comfortably fit in on a fourth line in a physical role, and can provide value there in grinding for pucks and energizing his team. So I question how Simmonds will age further given how rapidly he's regressed since reaching his thirties, but as of right now he's a middle-6 winger who's a power play specialist.
