Flippula, a veteran of many successful NHL seasons and a cup winner, was brought to NYI to bolster the team's center depth in their bottom six and provide valuable veteran mentorship to the Isles' young players. He's no offensive top-6 center, but he's always been strong defensively and has a history of being decent to good at faceoffs. He's not an elite defensive center, but he's soundly above average in his own end and can contribute on the penalty kill. At 34, though, how much longer he can fill that role is up in the air. At this point, though, he's a decent third line defensive center who's best suited for a 4th line shutdown role.
