TUUKKA RASK - Goalie - 31 - $7.00MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 1/30/19
The Bruins’ franchise goaltender, soon to be Rask is already the winningest goalie in Bruins history and has had a decorated career with the team including a Stanley Cup in 2011 (albeit as a backup) plus another trip to the finals in 2013 and a Vezina Trophy as the league’s best goaltender in 2014. A butterfly goalie, Rask is an athlete who 6’2 frame allows him to effectively protect the net. After spectacular results as Tim Thomas’s backup through the 2011-2012 season, Rask has been a great starter, though his play has decreased somewhat since his dominant 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 campaigns, although some of his struggles can be attributed to turnover on the Bruins’ blue line and a “retool” by the team during the 2015-2016 season. Furthermore, his performances in the playoffs seem to have declined as well, as he was flat out dominant earlier in his career but has since struggled to produce elite results. A tough start to the 2018-2019 season had some fans wondering whether Rask’s play had begun to truly spiral downward, but he has since rebounded very well, even flashing some signs of his younger, elite self for stretches. Despite his somewhat inconsistent play, Rask is a reliable, above-average starter in the NHL, though he isn’t quite worthy of the “elite” title he received earlier in his career.
