TROY BROUWER - Right Winger - 33 - $.850MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2019-2020
LAST UPDATED 3/5/19
After signing a bloated contract with Calgary as part of the infamous 2016 free agent class, Brouwer was bought out of the end of his deal after an underwhelming two seasons in the "C of Red." While he used to be a ~20+ goal, ~40+ point type middle-6 power forward, Brouwer is now only fraction of his former self. His speed has evaporated, and shift after shift he gives an impression that the game has passed him by. He can still be a valuable 4th line veteran presence, but he's not good for more than 30 points each year and that offensive production should decline further as he progresses further into his thirties. He spent a career playing an aggressive, physical style, and the penalties for playing that style have become exponentially more apparent. As he continues to age, he'll likely settle into more of a 13th forward role as playing him every night will soon be too much to ask. As a cheap 4th line veteran, Brouwer is likely still a valuable asset to a contending team but as a rapidly declining physical player it's tough to say how much longer he'll be able to stick at the game's highest level.
