TOREY KRUG - Defenseman - 27 - $5.25MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 1/30/19
After bursting onto the scene in the 2013 playoffs, Krug has proven himself as a top-flight offensive defenseman in the NHL. With great skating, passing, puck handling, and vision, Krug is the prototypical modern day puck moving blueliner. Furthermore, Krug is worthy of consideration as one of the best powerplay quarterbacks in the league. Why, then, was Krug only ranked 16th in the NHL’s Top 20 Defenseman rankings in the 2018 offseason? His defense. While Krug may be capable of producing elite point totals for a defenseman his size (5’9, 180lbs.) allows opposing forwards to work around him and get to the net on a consistent basis, which in turn limits the amount of even strength minutes he gets. While Krug has a high motor and is a smart player overall, there is simply no getting around the fact that he is too small and not strong enough to really make an impact defensively. For what he is, however, Krug is a great player to have. Defensemen with the ability to see the ice and quarterback a powerplay like he does don’t grow on trees in the NHL, and with Krug being on the right side of 30, there’s a chance he gets even better for the Bruins. But, given his defensive woes, playing top-pairing minutes for him just isn't a viable option, so he's likely a strong offensive #3 who thrives with a defensive partner and quarterbacking the first power play unit.
