TONY DeANGELO - Defenseman - 23 - $.863MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2019-20
LAST UPDATED 1/28/19
Now on his third team since being drafted in the first round by Tampa, DeAngelo has always been a gifted offensive defenseman with warts in his defensive game and his consistency. Since his time in junior, DeAngelo has always been able to use his speed and his other offensive tools to create chances on the rush and in the offensive zone. What's kept him from establishing himself as a regular NHL defenseman thus far, though, is his weakness in his own end. Being a true offensive defenseman requires a good degree of risk-taking, and DeAngelo has that, but those risks sometimes cause defensive mistakes which lead to high-end chances for the other team, negating the benefit of DeAngelo's offensive risks. Unless he can improve his defense and get more consistent, DeAngelo is destined to be a AAAA tweener who can produce if he's sheltered on a bottom pairing and on a power play. But if DeAngelo can improve his defense to be at least passable, he could become a valuable puck-moving 2-way #4 for the Rangers.
