T.J. OSHIE - Right Winger - 32 - $5.75MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2025-2026
LAST UPDATED 9/20/19
An American hockey icon due to his heroics in the 2014 Sochi Olympics, the Capitals acquired Oshie from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for Troy Brouwer during the 2015 offseason and have since signed him through the 2024-2025 season at a $5,750,000 annual cap hit. Oshie provides the Capitals with a sparkplug in their top 6. With solid puck control, skating, and a hard-nosed, energetic play style, Oshie consistently demands attention from opposing players in all three zones. However, Oshie’s play style comes with some significant drawbacks. For one, he isn’t the biggest player on the ice, which combined with his aggressive play style makes him quite injury prone. While his defensive play isn’t terrible, it does leave a lot to be desired. Also, he turns 33 in December of 2019, so decline is probably going to come sooner rather than later. Given that he’s under contract for the next 6 seasons, his contract could become an albatross against Washington’s cap. However, Oshie should still be good for around 25 goals and 55 points a season barring injury before his inevitable decline hits.
