TIM SCHALLER - Left Winger/Center - 28 - $1.9MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/28/19
After a few decent but largely replaceable seasons in Boston, the Vancouver Canucks gave a two-year, $1.9MM (AAV) contract to Schaller, hoping he could be an anchor for their fourth line and their penalty kill. While Schaller performed pretty much as expected when he got onto the ice, actually getting onto the ice proved to be the issue, as e played in a career-low 47 games. Schaller will need to prove he can stay healthy to revive his value, because his actual on-ice profile is pretty decent. Shaller isn't the most impressive player. He's probably best when he's left unnoticed, actually. Schaller has decent size and strength, and can make a legitimate defensive impact thanks to those physical gifts and above-average defensive awareness. He won't be a Selke-winning center, but he can anchor a second unit penalty kill and responsibly execute a coach's defensive system on the fourth line, providing some punch and energy in the process. Offensively, Schaller is limited, lacking a solid shot, above-average skating abilities, or real high-end playmaking instincts. Schaller is capable of producing well at the AHL level, but he can't create on his own at the NHL level. Still, even if he produces only marginal offensive contributions, he still provides above-average defensive value and can help a penalty kill, making him a good fourth liner.
