THOMAS HICKEY - Defenseman - 29 - $2.5MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2022-23
LAST UPDATED 12/17/18
Since never quite living up to his high draft status, Hickey has cemented himself as a solid, albeit somewhat mediocre top-6 defenseman. He's more of a two-way defenseman, as his play in both ends of the ice are serviceable, but he does not overly impress in either area. He's not one to shy away from a physical encounter, but as a somewhat smaller defenseman, he's too easily knocked off the puck and doesn't have the skating abilities to compensate for that shortcoming. He's not the defenseman a team should trust to anchor its #1 penalty kill or #1 power play, but Hickey can be reasonably expected to contribute on a weaker second penalty kill unit. Still before the age of thirty, Hickey is a serviceable bottom-pairing defenseman, and he offers two crucial things to each team he plays on: stability and mediocrity.
