SVEN BAERTSCHI - Left Winger - 26 - $3.36MM Cap Hit - 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 8/27/19
Sven Baertschi is a former top prospect who never quite saw his offensive development take off. Baertschi was an elite scorer at lower levels of hockey, highlighted by his 47-game, 94-point 2011-2012 season in the WHL. Baertschi always had fantastic hands and a good offensive mind, but he struggled to adapt to the professional game and never was able to change his style to stay away from the scoring habits that work in junior hockey but are major roadblocks professionally. Baertschi plays with energy and intensity, but he's not a fast enough skater or a strong enough player on the puck to be able to create offense consistently by himself. He can creatively utilize his offensive tools to set up teammates or finish chances they give him, but he can't be a self-starting offensive engine. His bouts with inconsistency and injuries means that he's far from a reliable scorer, but at his best he can score nearly 20 goals and 40 points. If he can stay healthy and find some chemistry with linemates, he may be able to really break out, but as of right now he's a fine third line scorer with some skill but without much defensive value.
