STEVEN KAMPFER - Defenseman - 30 - $.800MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 1/30/19
A 4th round pick of the Anaheim Ducks in 2007, Kampfer is a well-traveled 7th defenseman who returned to the Bruins in a swap with the Rangers for Adam McQuaid. Frankly, Kampfer has made an NHL career out of simply being “there” on a team’s blueline. He plays a cautious, defensive game, making him a decent option as a full time 7th d-man. His offense is a major shortcoming of his game, and he can't skate well enough nor does he have strong enough puck skills to be a factor in the transition game. He can be a body on a team's bottom pairing and not look out of place, but Kampfer's the kind of defender that's best when he's not noticed. While he has his moments and is always willing to stick up for his teammates, that's not enough to make him an NHL regular looks like is more of a career AAAA tweener destined to bounce between the AHL and NHL for the foreseeable future. He's a weak #7 at best, but is better suited as a team's #8 or #9 defenseman.
