SLATER KOEKKOEK - Defenseman - 25 - $.925MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 7/28/19
While Slater Koekkoek has been a massive disappointment as a former top-10 pick and being drafted directly before Filip Forsberg, Koekkoek could still prove himself to be a viable NHL defenseman. Koekkoek is a good puck mover, with the puck skills, vision, and skating ability to be an asset in transition. Koekkoek's issues are defensive, as he isn't strong enough or smart enough to be a true defensive presence. He lacks the positioning skills to kill chances and lacks the strength to effectively restore possession of the puck by winning board battles. If he can more effectively utilize his frame and skating to make an impact, as well as learn to turn his transitional abilities to actually produce, Koekkoek could stick in the NHL. He has bottom-pairing puck mover upside. Think Oesterle. As of right now, though, he belongs on the top pairing in the AHL or in the press box as a low-end #7.
