SHAYNE GOSTISBEHERE - Defenseman - 26 - $4.5MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2023-2024
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
Shayne Gostisbehere had a difficult most recent season. He scored 65 points the year before, an elite number, and was unable to repeat that success, as he only posted 37 points, much closer to his 2016-17 season point total. This begs the question, was his 65 point explosion just a fluke? It's hard to tell. Talent-wise, Gostisbehere looks like a true offensive engine. He has great vision, he's a good skater, and he's very much an asset in transition. That puck moving ability allows him to help a power play with zone entries and his puck skills allow him to be an excellent passer and a true PPQB. Unfortunately, though, his aggressive offensive style causes him to be pretty mistake-prone, and those mistakes dig into his overall value. Consistency has been the real issue for Gostisbehere, and he's so far been unable to get into a scoring rhythm that sticks for a long time. Developing chemistry and consistency will be key for Gostisbehere, and the next season will be crucial in determining if he's that elite, one-of-a-kind 65 point scorer or a merely above-average, flawed 40 point man. If he's the former, he's an elite top-pairing #2 who needs to play with a defensive partner to cover for his mistakes. If he's the latter, he's more of a good #4 who needs to play on the second pairing with a defensive #2 so that his aggressive style doesn't get the better of him. Either way, he has value, but Philly fans need to watch this season closely to really get a read on who Gostisbehere will be for the years to come.
