SETH JONES - Defenseman - 24 - $5.4MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2022-2023
LAST UPDATED 8/1/19
As a former top prospect and top-5 pick, Seth Jones has always been viewed as an incredibly high-upside player. Finally now is Jones reaching that upside, as he's blossomed into Columbus' legitimate #1 defenseman. Jones has elite size, strength, and mobility for a defenseman, and is just as at ease with the puck on his stick in the offensive zone as he is pinned into his own zone fighting for pucks in front of the net. Jones is an elite defensive defenseman, capable of handling the toughest defensive assignments as well as anchoring a penalty kill. Jones' skating and intelligence also allows him to be an above-average offensive producer, capable of helping a power play with his shot an being able to use his size to seal the end boards and keep clearances from exiting the zone. Jones will never be a Karlsson-esque point-per-game offensive juggernaut, but he's scored nearly 60 points before and the 60 point plateau is his long-term upside, even if it's far more likely that he settles in as a mid-40's point scorer. Given his ability to anchor a top pairing and take on the toughest defensive assignments, Seth Jones is a strong #1 defenseman with legitimate Norris Trophy upside.
