SERGEI BOBROVSKY - Goalie - 30 - $10MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2026-2027
LAST UPDATED 7/28/19
A two-time Vezina trophy winner, Bobrovsky played an excellent 7 years in Columbus into a massive 7-year contract with the Florida Panthers to be Roberto Luongo's successor in Sunrise. Despite seeing his sv% drop from .931 in 2016-17 to a more pedestrian .913 in 2018-19, Bobrovsky is still an elite goaltender. He simply makes saves that many goalies cannot make, and can steal games that his team has no business winning. That being said, there are legitimate issues with Bobrovsky's game. He has shown himself to be prone to large amounts of inconsistency, and will have meltdowns in games where he simply is not on. Bobrovsky does also have a very poor track record in the playoffs (outside of his legendary sweep of the dominant Tampa Bay Lightning this past season) and that is worrying. He's also on the wrong side of thirty now, and while 30 is still middle-aged for goalies we don't know how well Bobrovsky's talents will hold up with age. He hasn't proven himself to be the calmest, most mentally tough goalie like a Henrik Lundqvist or a Carey Price, and their long term contracts only worked/work because the mental side of their games is so refined that even if their physical tools regress they'll still be above-average goalies. We cannot say the same about Bobrovsky, and once Spencer Knight is ready about halfway through his massive 7-year deal will the Panthers still want to have the keys to their franchise in the hands of a mid-30's Bobrovsky? It's concerning, but as of right now Bobrovsky is still an elite goaltender and will continue to be for the foreseeable future.
