SEMYON VARLAMOV - Goalie - 31 - $5MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2023-2024
LAST UPDATED 7/28/19
Varlamov's hefty free agent contract is probably less due to his actual on-ice play and more due to his off-ice relationship with the Islanders' top goaltending prospect Ilya Sorokin, who the Islanders desperately want to cross the pond from the KHL and become their first franchise goalie since literally Billy Smith. Varlamov is still a capable goaltender when healthy, as his .910 sv% over the last two seasons would suggest. His issue has been staying healthy, but the Islanders' goalie coach/goalie whisperer Mitch Korn should help Varlamov have a career season if his work with Robin Lehner is any indication. His issue will be staying healthy, as his inability to start 50+ games consistently has made him more of a 1A goalie than a true #1, but because the Islanders have a Jennings Trophy winner in Thomas Greiss as their backup, they should be fine. He's still a talented 1A goalie, but he needs to stay healthy.
