SCOTT LAUGHTON - Center/Winger - 25 - $2.3MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
As a former first round pick, Scott Laughton is a bit of a disappointment. Like many former CHL scorers, the habits that carried him in juniors did not stick in the professional game. But, to Laughton's credit, he adapted his game, and developed traits that would give him value in the NHL in absence of scoring. Laughton is a strong two-way winger who brings a high work ethic and relentless motor to every shift. He's gritty and he'll grind his way to every puck he gets, and he's smart enough to capably kill penalties and handle moderate shutdown duties. He won't win a Selke, but he's a legitimate defensive center who is also an asset in the faceoff dot. His speed and puck skills could stand to improve so that he can score more, but either way he's a defense-first center so any offensive production is just gravy. Laughton's penalty killing and defensive prowess make him a good 4C at the NHL level.
