SAMUEL GIRARD - Defenseman - 21 - $5MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2025-2026
LAST UPDATED 7/28/19
After breaking out over a 5-game stretch as a Nashville Predator, Samuel Girard was shipped to Colorado as part of the three-team Matt Duchene/Kyle Turris/eventually Bowen Byram monstrosity of a trade. Girard has excellent skating ability for a defenseman and is a major asset in the transition game. His aggressive puck moving style sometimes causes him to have defensive lapses, but overall he's a strong enough skater and a smart enough defender to overcome his lack of size to be a decent defensive defenseman. His offensive skills are his calling card, though, and as his playmaking abilities improve and his judgement for when to join the rush improves Girard should only prove to have even more value. He's a decent #4 puck mover right now with legitimate top-pairing upside to become a Ryan Ellis-esque #2 if his defensive game can take the next step as Ellis' did.
