RYAN MURRAY - Defenseman - 25 - $4.6MM - RFA in 2019-2020
LAST UPDATED 8/1/19
While Ryan Murray has been a disappointment as a former second overall pick, he's still a quality NHL defenseman and is deserving of legitimate ice time when healthy. Murray's most pressing issue as a player has been his availability, as he's only played a full 82-game season once and has not played more than 60 games since 2015-16. That being said, when Murray does manage to get onto the ice, he's a good defensive defenseman. He's smart, smooth-skating, and steady. He's shown the ability to anchor a penalty kill and use his high hockey IQ to interrupt plays before they happen. Murray doesn't have elite size and will never be an imposing physical defenseman, but he's still a strong shutdown piece and a genuine penalty kill specialist. His offense is still uneven, as his ability to move the puck as a mobile defenseman doesn't always translate into production, and his lack of availability keeps him from developing chemistry with teammates and keeps him from getting into an offensive rythm game-to-game. Murray is a steady defenseman who can easily handle second pairing minutes 5v5 and anchor a power play, making him a solid #3 defenseman with some puck moving upside as well as a strong specialization as a penalty kill specialist.
