RYAN KESLER - Center - 35 - $6.87MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2022-2023
LAST UPDATED 9/19/19
Kesler is out for the season, putting his NHL future in doubt.
UPDATED 7/8/19
There was a day when Ryan Kesler would prowl opposing rinks and terrorize opponents with his shutdown defensive play and intimidating physical presence. That day has passed, though. Age and nagging injuries have caught up to Kesler, and given his recent play he seems destined for an unceremonious retirement via LTIR before his contract ends. Nagging effects of hip injuries and overall physical deterioration have taken their toll, and Kesler now lacks the speed, jump, and strength to make the defensive impact he once could. He also no longer possesses the puck skills that allowed him to be a secondary point producer, making him a liability on both ends of the ice in 5v5 play. His penalty killing is also significantly worse than it once was, and while his faceoff abilities are still strong he no longer can fight for pucks with the same strength he once could. Kesler still has value as a screener on a power play, but everywhere besides there and at the faceoff dot Kesler is a liability to his team. He's a mediocre 4C at best, (with that aforementioned PP value) and should be facing retirement sooner rather than later.
