RYAN HARTMAN - Right Winger - 24 - $1.90MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
Despite only having a career high for points in a season of 31, Ryan Hartman has now had two NHL franchises spend a first round pick on him, another give up former all star Wayne Simmonds to acquire him. At every stop, Hartman has fallen short of expectations. When teams look at Hartman, they see a guy with a high motor, decent skating, and a gritty style. They see someone who can potentially score 20 goals and hold his own in his own end. Unfortunately, though, no area of Hartman's game has really developed all that strongly and he's now just a very unremarkable 24 year old former top prospect. He doesn't have a great shot, nor does he have fantastic puck skills, and a 20+20 season is likely his absolute ceiling. Similarly, Hartman is an unimpressive defensive player who can't kill penalties and only provides energy and some physical value rather than true defensive value. There are definitely worse players to give 12 minutes per night, and at least Hartman isn't an active liability and can have some good games, but teams expecting more will be disappointed. He's a good third or fourth line energy guy who can capably give low-teens minutes to a cap-strapped team.
