ROOPE HINTZ - Left Winger - 22 - $.811MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/17/19
Full disclosure here: I've been a major supporter of Roope Hintz throughout his career as a prospect and am not ashamed to say I've been a major cheerleader of his as a prospect. So while I'll try to be as objective as possible as I can in this report, I feel obligated to explain how my personal biases may come into play here. That being said, Roope Hintz was one of the most silently impressive rookies this past season. Despite being only 22 years old, Roope played like a veteran, and looked completely in his element at the NHL level. While he's not the most skilled player in the world, he's capable of being a high-end offensive piece at lower levels and has the puck skills and skating to be a 20+25 player at his peak at the NHL level. Roope's best asset isn't his puck skills, or his skating, no, it's his brain. Hintz is legitimately one of the smartest players I've seen at his age, and he uses his incredible hockey IQ to overcome his lack of high-end skill or shutdown defensive ability. Hintz doesn't have an imposing physical presence or some high-end offensive tool, instead he just knows where to be on the ice and what to do in every situation. He has such a steadying effect on the game when he plays because you, as a fan, and by extension, coaches, always know they can trust him when his skates hit the ice. He'll rarely ever make a stupid mistake and will always do the responsible thing with the puck. Does this limit his overall offensive upside? Sure, he won't try an incredibly risky stretch pass to catch his opponents off guard, for example, but that doesn't mean he still won't wow you with his insane hockey IQ. He's still capable of surprises and should be a top-6 staple for Dallas going forward.
