ROBERT BORTUZZO

ROBERT BORTUZZO - Defenseman - 30 - $1.37MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2022-2023

LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
Robert Bortuzzo is a big, physical defenseman who played a key role in the Blues' being able to capture the franchise's first Stanley Cup. Bortuzzo has never been a skilled offensive defenseman. His best natural gift is his size, and he's able to effectively utilize that size to create mismatches in the defensive zone and muscle his way to pucks. He's not the most fluid athlete and won't be a major asset in transition with zone exits, but he can capably dig for pucks and fight for space in the tough areas of the ice. He's smart enough and positionally refined enough to kill penalties, and his reach allows him to make life more difficult for opposing forwards than smaller defensemen could. Bortuzzo isn't going to produce anything more than marginal offense, but he can kill penalties and play a defensive, physical role on a third pairing with another NHL defenseman, making him a good sixth defenseman on a contending team.
