RASMUS ANDERSSON - Defenseman - 22 - $.755MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 6/28/19
Rasmus Andersson broke into the NHL in 2018-19, and really impressed. On a Calgary team full of talented defensemen, Andersson was able to seize a roster spot from the beginning of the season and never let go of it. A feisty, mobile defenseman, Andersson brought skill in transition to the Flames as well as his willingness to play a scrappy game. He has the size and physical ability to reliably win board battles, and can match up against tough power forwards. He's not at as strong on the mental side of the defensive game, and he sometimes makes errors in his own end that are avoidable. Much of this can be attributed to his status as a rookie defenseman, but he will need to sharpen his instincts in order to become a shut down force in the NHL. Going along with that concern, Andersson is a strong skater and puck mover, but not a great offensive producer. He lacks the puck skills or playmaking instincts to rack up points, and while he has been a strong offensive producer at the CHL and AHL levels, his NHL ceiling is likely capped at a generous 40 points due to his only average abilities in that area. With all that being said, Andersson is only 22, and has so much room to grow. Andersson right now profiles as a physical, mobile second pairing defenseman (with a good partner) or someone who can reliably carry a bottom pairing. He has upside to be significantly more than that, he'll just need to improve his offense and the mental side of his defensive game.
