PONTUS ABERG - Left Winger - 25 - $.700MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/6/19
Despite being a former well-regarded prospect and an obviously skilled player, Pontus Aberg has not been able to stick in an NHL lineup nor stick with a singular NHL organization. He's instead bounced around from team to team, from the ice to the press box, with each organization and coach hoping to unlock the upside he so evidently seems to have. Aberg is a skill player. He's a good skater with plus speed and decent shooting ability. His raw traits alone suggest that he has the makeup of a speedy, energetic top-9 scoring winger, but the results simply have not been there for Aberg. Aberg has struggled to generate scoring chances consistently and maintain a high level of play at both ends of the ice. His night-to-night effort can fluctuate, and he can sometimes look completely lost with and without the puck. There are flashes with Aberg, where he looks like a legitimately promising offensive force, but those have been too few and far between for coaches to consider them anything other than what they are: just flashes. Aberg isn't an old forward, and still has upside to be a good player, but until he can show some consistency and earn the trust of his coaches he'll be mired in the same limbo he's in now. If he can't figure things out, I think he'd be an excellent KHL forward. But obviously, I don't want that to happen, and I hope he figures things out.
