P.K. SUBBAN - Defenseman - 30 - $9.00MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2022-2023
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
One of the most eccentric, controversial, and high-profile players in hockey, P.K. Subban has brought glamour and energy to every city he's played in. He's a former Norris winner and one half of one of the league's most talked-about trades. The Predators, needing to clear space for Matt Duchene and disappointed with Subban's most recent campaign, shipped him to New Jersey for an underwhelming return headlined by Steven Santini. Subban now is the most high-profile defenseman the Devils have had in a decade or so, and should prove to be a major help in their efforts to re-sign Taylor Hall, assuming they click. On the ice, Subban is a very interesting player. He's an awkward skater with a bit of a weird stride, but that doesn't get too much in the way of his effectiveness and he has a proven track record of being an electric puck mover. Few defenseman can match the excitement that comes from a Subban-led rush, and he can be the spark that keeps a team in a game that seems out of reach. That being said, Subban has struggled to stay healthy this past season and in the past few years, (outside of 2017-18) and a faster NHL has made his puck moving less special. There are simply more players who offer the same type of speedy puck movement that Subban can provide, and his zone-exit abilities are less unique now. That's not to say Subban has no value. He's still a sure thing to score 40+ points when he's healthy, and there are still very few more exciting defenseman in hockey. He's a player who will be beloved by the fans of his city and as long as he doesn't wear out his welcome, his teammates as well. He's genuinely a good person when you get down to it, despite what some people in the media may want to paint him as, and his record as a philanthropist is evidence of that. He's still a valuable defenseman, even if he's not the elite #1 he used to be thanks to the changing NHL around him.
