PAUL STASTNY - Center - 33 - $6.5MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2021-2022

Vegas' Stanley Cup Final loss really stung, and as a result they were aggressive in trying to double down on their current core to try to win a Stanley Cup. Part of that aggressiveness was the Stastny signing, as they gave an aging forward a pretty hefty free agent contract, something that typically isn't a good idea. His first season in the Vegas was a success, though, and Stastny looks well set to have another strong season. Stastny proved to have incredible chemistry with linemates Max Pacioretty and Mark Stone, and their trio was an absolute force down the stretch. Stastny finished the season with 42 points in only 50 games, good for a 69 point pace over an 82 game stretch. Those 69 points would be Stastny's highest mark since 2009-2010, and would have been a major difference maker for the Golden Knights. That explains why so many fans are excited for Stastny to be healthy. He just has the potential to be such a prolific offensive scorer when he's put in the perfect situation. He's a natural playmaker who sees the ice very well and knows how to use his above-average puck skills and good-enough skating to put his teammates in positions to score. He's a threat to do something on the ice whenever he's with some really talented linemates, but without them he doesn't have a good enough shot, nor is he a good enough shooter to produce on his own. Additionally, Stastny's larger body of work pre-Vegas is a bit less impressive, and his whole scoring history suggests he's more of a 50-60 point 2C than a near-point-per-game 1C. But only time will tell whether or not his breakout is sustainable. Defensively, Stastny has intelligence and experience and can play a steady, calming defensive role. That being said, sometimes his aggressiveness can get the better of him, and while he can kill penalties and not get embarrassed he shouldn't be a permanent solution there. Overall he's a talented 2C who can fill in as a de facto 1C when he's given some incredible linemates.
