PAUL BYRON - Left Winger - 29 - $1.6MM Cap Hit - 4 Year Extension at $3.4MM AAV until 2023-2024 (UFA)
LAST UPDATED 5/17/20
As of right now, it looks as if Byron's best days in Montreal are behind him. While his nagging injury issues may play a role in this, he looks like he's lost a step on the ice. For someone who relies on his speed mostly to score goals, that's a very worrying sign. With a 4 year extension in hand, he'll have time to rebound, but look for the Habs to quickly turn to a younger option if he continues to flounder.
LAST UPDATED 12/6/18
After being claimed on waivers by GM Marc Bergevin in October 2015, Paul has posted back-to-back 20 goal seasons in Montreal. The biggest reason for his success is his speed, which he uses to beat defenders on the rush and create high-end chances for himself. He's not incredibly skilled, nor does he possess a truly elite shot, and he is also quite lacking size-wise at only 5 foot 7, but he's a hard worker with a high compete level. He contributes in his own end, and is able to kill penalties effectively while also being a threat to score a shorthanded goal due to his speed. Byron has cemented himself as a speedy, effective, and responsible middle-6 scorer who can provide value to any team in any system. Montreal has also recognized his strong character and value as a leader, and he is currently part of the team's leadership, wearing an "A" on his jersey most nights.
