PATRIK LAINE - Right Winger - 21 - RFA in 2019-2020
LAST UPDATED 9/1/19
Laine just confuses me. How can someone so obviously talented barely hit 50 points? The man scored 8 goals in four days last November, including a five goal game. He's obviously incredibly skilled, so what's up with him? It's not his shot, for sure. Laine has one of the game's best shots, (if not the best) and can capably score from any distance in the offensive zone. Laine's snap shot and wrist shot come with the velocity of a below-average slap shot, and they come with the accuracy of a sniper rifle. If Laine gets a clean look at the net, he's going to score. It's that simple. The rest of his game is significantly more muddy, though. While Laine is blessed with incredible size and decent strength, he struggles to create time and space with the puck on his own. He needs a playmaker to put him in the best position to score, and his own playmaking skills are quite lacking. He'll be the guy who scores 40 goals but can't hit 30 assists consistently. His defense, also, is suspect. He has the size and strength to make an impact, but he sometimes looks apathetic in his own end and seems fully focused on getting the puck to score, and only that. He has defensive upside, but I'm pessimistic. If Laine can find some semblance of consistency, he can be a perennial 50 goal scorer, but that consistency has thus far eluded him, so I don't know if it'll ever come. For Jets fans, I hope Laine figures things out, but as of right now he's a very streaky but insanely skilled top-6 sniper.
