PATRICE BERGERON - Center - 33 - $6.875MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2022-2023
LAST UPDATED 1/17/19
The longest tenured member of the Bruins, Bergeron is still the elite two-way force he has been for the entirety of his career. Since debuting in 2003, Bergeron has established himself as a positive clubhouse presence and a true do-it-all 1C. For the middle portion of Bergeron’s career, he functioned in more of a shutdown role, and thus settled into more of a ~60 point range production wise, but since being united with David Pastrnak and Brad Marchand, his production has risen to point-per-game level. Bergeron’s faceoff winning ability and defense-first approach opens up the ice for Pastrnak and Marchand, who are both high-quality finesse players, allowing them to fully utilize their respective scoring abilities. Because Bergeron is usually the third player to enter the offensive zone in this dynamic, his wingers are able to give him several quality one-timer opportunities per game, which explains why he’s been at mid-30 goal pace since Head Coach Bruce Cassidy created his top line. While Bergeron’s age could soon lead to some decline, he is still one of the most complete centers in the NHL, a perennial finalist for the Selke Trophy, and an invaluable team leader.
