NIKOLAY GOLDOBIN - Left Winger - 23 - $.900MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2020-2021

Nikolay Goldobin is a very polarizing player. Many fans are convinced of his skill, and I have to admit, it shows up on tape and when I saw him live. He's an incredibly aggressive talent that will always be a threat to make something happen when he touches the puck. He has great skating abilities with exceptional agility and quick acceleration. He can burn past slower defenders and be a threat to score on a stretch pass. He has the offensive instincts NHL playmakers need, and he's always out to set up his teammates or pot a goal himself. He'll score at a point-per-game rate at the AHL level, but thus far his challenge at the NHL level has been his play away from the puck. Goldobin isn't the biggest player and struggles when he needs to endure the full force of an NHL defensive defenseman's attention. He can get outmuscled for pucks and isn't a very strong defensive winger, lacking positional awareness and the willingness to grind it out for tough pucks. I think that his offense, if it translates from the AHL level to the NHL level, can make up for him as a defensive liability, but unless he can bulk up and better utilize the space his speed gives him, he won't score enough to do so. I think he's a risky scorer who needs power play time and ample 5v5 ice time to really learn from his mistakes and get the chance to score, and on a team that's still building like Vancouver I think that Goldobin has the right situation to blossom into a true top-6 force.
