NIKOLAJ EHLERS - Left Winger - 23 - $6.00MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2025-2026
LAST UPDATED 9/1/19
Nikolaj Ehlers had a season to forget in 2018-19/ His shooting percentage actually rose, but he struggled to get into games consistently and could not find the steady scoring rhythm that marked his two prior seasons. As a result, Ehlers played in a career-low 62 games and posted a career-low 37 points. After two straight 60+ point seasons, that was a major disappointment. Will that be an outlier season, or is it a desperate warning sign for things to come? I think it's the former. Ehlers has legit skill. He has incredible vision and puck skills, and he's a natural playmaker. He's truly creative with the puck and he's a threat to score whenever he's on the ice. His speed is above-average and he can create offense with lesser linemates. That all being said, Ehlers struggles with the lack of time and space the North American game naturally has, and as a result he can see his offensive efforts fail simply because he held on to the puck for too long. He needs to get better acclimated to the physical side of the North American game in order to really restore his offensive impact. Additionally, his offensive consistency is a bit lacking, and he needs to prove he can bring his best every night over the course of a full 82-game season. I believe in Ehlers' upside, but he has a few things to work out before he gets back on the tracks to being a very promising young playmaking winger.
