NICO HISCHIER - Center - 20 - $.925MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
While the injury to Taylor Hall, the general regression of the Devils as a team, and the own injury battles he faced caused Nico Hischier to see his scoring total decrease, he still grew as a player this past season and is poised to cement his status as a true potential #1 center, as long as he can stave off Jack Hughes trying to take his spot next to Hall. Nico is a very smart player, with excellent puck skills and strong skating abilities. At lower levels, he can take control of a game, yet those bad habits that don't carry over to the NHL haven't plagued him at the NHL level, and he's very successfully adapted his style to the NHL game. He plays with grit, effort, and a tremendous level of awareness, and he's incredibly versatile despite his inexperience. He's a capable defensive player as well as a driver of play on offense, and he has legitimate high-end offensive upside. His fantastic rookie year was less noticed as it should have been, and with the arrival of Jack Hughes I fear that Hischier is set for even more bouts with being underrated. So while his actual value may always be more impressive than his leaguewide reputation, that shouldn't take away from how we see him as a player: as a legitimate play-driving 2C with real franchise player upside.
