NICK SEELER - Defenseman - 26 - $.725MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
Nick Seeler is a player who I have a lot of respect for. Sure, he's not a very skilled hockey player and is not a very valuable defenseman at any level thanks to how he plays. But that being said, he's clawed his way to every opportunity he's been given and he's shown a willingness to do anything and everything it takes to get to the top of the hockey world. He's not a great skater, he doesn't have good puck skills, and he lacks the defensive awareness and positional skills to be a stay-at-come everyday defenseman. That being said, Seeler is an imposing physical threat with the ability to rattle off big hits and go toe-to-toe with legitimate heavyweights. He's the type of player that's nearly extinct in today's NHL and he's the type of player whose value is among the most difficult to quantify. Is there value in a defenseman who can't produce offense or even defend very well, but one who can intimidate, fight, and hit? There probably is some value in the right scheme for a defenseman like that, but unfortunately that value is so conditional and limited that I struggle to say he's worth the risk of putting him in the lineup. He might have some value against the right team and in the right situation, but wouldn't it be more prudent to spend the roster spot on someone who can at least kill penalties? Seeler is a #7/8 enforcer defenseman who may have some value here and there but he's personally not someone who I'd spend a roster spot on, but there are definitely coaches and GM's who disagree with me.
