NICK SCHMALTZ - Center - 23 - $5.85MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2026-2027
LAST UPDATED 7/25/19
The Coyotes paid quite the price to acquire Schmaltz, giving up two former (but to that point underwhelming) first round picks in Brendan Perlini and Dylan Strome, and considering Strome's breakout as a Blackhawk, that price only seems higher. That being said, I cannot say that that price was not worth it. Schmaltz is a legitimate offensive talent at the center position, and flashed the ability to be the first line center Arizona has needed for generations. Despite being undersized, Schmaltz is an offensive wizard, with a creative playmaking mind and elite puck skills. He's also no slouch defensively, and despite not being physical enough to be a shutdown force, he's a legitimate positive in his own end. He doesn't shoot as much as he probably should, but his shooting percentage has been unsustainably high at the NHL level, suggesting that when he does shoot, he picks his shots well. Schmaltz has the puck skills, creativity, and skating ability of a top-6 center, and as long as he can stay healthy, Arizona will have a high-end offensive center locked up for a relatively cheap price until 2026-2027.
