NICK RITCHIE - Left Winger - 23 - $1MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 7/11/19
At 23 years of age, it's safe to say that Nick Ritchie did not live up to his lofty draft status. Drafted ahead of players like Dylan Larkin, Alex Tuch, and Nick Schmaltz, Ritchie simply has not shown enough offensive upside to be considered a key piece. He plays with a gnarly style and is strong enough to win board battles reliably, but he lacks the high end skill, skating, and consistency to turn his style and strength into points. He's a strong asset on a power play, though, with a keen ability to park himself in front of the net and create scoring chances there, but at even strength he's weaker. His defense is also not a strong area of his game, as he sometimes lacks the focus and positioning skills to be a shutdown presence. He's strong enough and big enough to have defensive upside, but right now he's a liability on that end. Going forward, Ritchie still could find great offensive success in the right system and with the right linemates, but as of right now he's more of a third-line power forward who specializes in being a net-front presence on a first powerplay unit.
