NICK HOLDEN - Defenseman - 32 - $2.2MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/28/19
Nick Holden has been a reliable but relatively unimpressive NHL defenseman for the past six seasons. In those seasons, he's been able to stick as a starting NHL defenseman thanks to his size and mobility. He's not the most impressive skater, but there are few defensemen his size who can skate at an even league-average level. As a result, Holden can help out a team's transition game, even if he's only a minor plus. His shot isn't great nor are his puck skills, so keep him off the power play, but in general his offense is decent for someone his size and with his profile. Defensively, Holden is a bit of a mixed bag. His size means that he has some pretty significant natural advantages in the dirtier areas of the ice, but he's not always one to utilize his size as best as he could, and he's not an overwhelmingly physical defenseman. Instead, his best defensive assets are his reach and his stable style, and as a result he's one of the defenseman who's best left unnoticed. He can capably fill in on a bottom pairing and help out a second unit PK, but he won't be some top-4 cornerstone, though he can fill in there sporadically. Holden is a good two-way #5 defenseman.
