NICK BJUGSTAD - Right Winger/Center - 27 - $4.1MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
After sticking with Barkov for the better part of 2017-18, Nick Bjugstad looked like he was breaking out. He scored almost 20 goals and 50 points, and seemed like a fit as a complementary player in Florida's top-6. The wheels fell off the following season, though, and Bjugstad was shipped to Pittsburgh as part of a major mid-season trade. Bjugstad didn't get back to his 17-18 form, but he also wasn't bad. Bjugstad has a towering 6-6 frame, which allows him to be a force in front of the net and in the corners. He doesn't get the most out of his size like a Brendan Gallagher would, but he has a quick trigger and can score like he can, just without as much volume. Bjugstad is an above-average shooter with good instincts, and can fit as a complementary winger with a good center. He won't drive play and he isn't much of a playmaker, but it's his shooting alone that would allow him to stick in a top-6. Defensively, Bjugstad's size and strength give him an advantage, but he lacks the instincts and positional awareness to be a true shutdown winger. Bjugstad is a big, responsible winger with a quick trigger who can fit on a third line as an average player or complement a good top-6 center with his shooting.
