NATHAN BEAULIEU - Defenseman - 26 - $1.00MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/28/19
Nathan Beaulieu was a pretty large disappointment in Montreal, making too many mistakes and frustrating fans with his apparent apathy to the tougher side of the defensive game. He was shipped to Buffalo for a third rounder, but requested a trade after a season there, and now finds himself in Winnipeg outside of the starting lineup looking in as training camp looms. What's wrong with Beaulieu on the ice? Well, he's not a total lost cause, I'll start with that. There are some legitimately good things about Beaulieu's game. He skates pretty well, and can move the puck. At his best, he's got the puck on his stick, and he's rushing up the ice with the offense and creating scoring chances. He can genuinely do that, but the consistency has never been there, and he's been far too mistake-prone to rely on in tough situations. He simply cannot play the physical side of the game, and he lacks the defensive awareness to avoid being a defensive liability. His aggressiveness and relative inability to stay secure with the puck causes him to be a defensive issue, and that combined with his offensive inconsistency makes him a tough player to play every night. His speed and skill can help energize a team, and there are worse injury replacements to keep on your team as depth, but his upside is limited thanks to all of his mistakes and his inability to improve since he was in his early twenties, and as a result he's a mid-tier #7 with some great tools but some similarly central flaws.
