MORGAN RIELLY - Defenseman - $5MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2022-2023
LAST UPDATED 8/26/19
Since he made his debut in the 2013-14 season, Morgan Rielly has steadily become the Leafs' #1 defenseman and franchise cornerstone. Rielly is an effortlessly skilled offensive defenseman. He skates incredibly well, has speed and agility, possesses great puck skills and vision, and is one of the most opportunistic defensemen in hockey. Rielly's 72 point explosion is likely a sign of things to come, as Rielly looks poised to become one of the game's most prolific offensive defensemen. Defensively, Rielly is a mixed bag. He plays a lot of minutes in all situations and draws rave reviews thanks to his intelligence and grit, but his underlying numbers don't paint as pretty of a picture. Rielly's isolated impact metrics are pessimistic about his defensive skills, measuring him as a net-positive (meaning he allows more than average) impact on scoring chances in his own end and on the power play. That being said, I think that Rielly has all the tools to be a great defensive defenseman, he just needs to use them with more consistency and cut down on his offensive aggressiveness. In total, Rielly is an elite offensive defenseman with some necessary growth needed defensively, making him one of the game's best #2 defensemen or a low-end #1 capable of playing top-pairing minutes with ease, just either with some holes or with a need to play with a decently capable partner.
