Vande Sompel, the smooth skating product of WHL Oshawa, has steadily improved in his second pro season. He's a very offensively skilled defenseman, and he's a great puck distributor who can quarterback a power play and rush the puck up the ice. His skating is his main strength along with his offensive skills but his defense still needs some work. He's not an outright liability but he just isn't at the point where he can be consistently counted upon to play tough minutes and survive pinned into his own end. If he can improve his defense, though, Vande Sompel could be a valuable puck moving defenseman at the NHL level. If not, though, then he'll end up more like a AAAA tweener who has all the tools but just can't quite put them together.
