MITCH MARNER - Right Winger - 22 - $10.8MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2025-2026
LAST UPDATED 8/22/19
Currently embroiled in difficult contract negotiations, Mitch Marner is potentially the best player on the Leafs' roster. After posting two impressive 60+ point seasons, Marner found immediate chemistry with free agent acquisition John Tavares. They both had career years, and Marner exploded for 94 points, an incredibly high number. Marner has always been a dynamic offensive talent and a self-starter on that end of the ice. He has phenomenal puck skills and is one of the game's premier playmakers. He has incredible vision and can thread the needle with the puck to make seemingly impossible passes. He drives offense like a first line center would, and despite not being the strongest he's a smart enough skater to still find enough time and space with the puck to make plays. Marner's concern going into the NHL was him being relatively weak, and whether or not his wiry frame would hold up against the rigors of the NHL game. While he's not a physical player and won't fight his way to very many pucks in his own end, he's been remarkably durable and has adapted his defensive game to prioritize his hockey IQ over his size. Marner is a plus defensive winger thanks to his ability to pickpocket pucks and facilitate zone exits, but he should not tire himself and risk burnout on the penalty kill. I think he could probably be fine killing penalties, but it's not worth the potential hit his offense might take if he's running out of energy playing so many minutes. Marner is an elite play-driving offensive talent and perhaps the best player the Leafs have the rights to. He deserves every cent he's asking for.
