MIRO HEISKANEN - Defenseman - 20 - $.894MM Cap Hit - RFA in 2021-2022
LAST UPDATED 8/17/19
Despite being a teenage rookie, Miro Heiskanen's emergence as a legitimately valuable NHL defenseman was a major reason why Dallas was able to engineer such a successful bounce-back season and upset the powerhouse Nashville Predators in the playoffs. Heiskanen is an elite skater with fantastic speed, edgework, and acceleration. He's a natural with the puck and he's at his best when he's joining the rush and facilitating zone entries. He's got a decent point shot and should score a reasonable amount of goals, but his best asset for his offense is his brain, and he's uniquely good at limiting his mistakes despite an aggressive offensive profile. Defensively, Heiskanen isn't exactly a physical force but he has sound positional awareness and is capable of killing penalties at a high level of efficiency thanks to his overall intelligence and skating abilities. Heiskanen's isolated impact metrics are very interesting, as he's measured as an incredibly strong penalty killer and a decent play driver on 5v5 offense, but the metrics are incredibly low on his power play abilities and they measure him as a major liability on the man advantage. While I think that Heiskanen can still quarterback a power play and should be given a long leash to work out his mistakes, these numbers are concerning. Given how at ease he was even as a teenage rookie, Heiskanen looks like he has legitimate #1 defenseman upside and should be the long-term anchor of Dallas' very underrated defense.
