MIRCO MUELLER - Defenseman - 24 - $1.40MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
While Mirco Mueller has been a bit of a disappointment as a former first round pick, that's not to say he's without NHL upside or NHL value. He's a shutdown defenseman at heart who plays a crease-clearing, stay-at-home game. He has good size and strength and plays with relative conservatism with the puck that allows him to limit mistakes. He's a steady defender who can match up with decently tough offensive opponents and help out a penalty kill. He's, in my opinion, very underrated defensively and should really help out the Devils' efforts to keep the puck out of the net. His utter lack of offense is concerning, as he does not have the skating ability, hands, or insticts to be an asset in transition or in the offensive zone. Still, he can be a real help to an offensive partner, covering for his partner's mistakes and allowing him to join the rush more frequently. He'd be a match next to the Devils' more offensively focused defensemen if paired with them over a full 82 game slate where they could develop chemistry, and if that ends up happening this season with P.K. Subban or Will Butcher, prepare for a Mirco Mueller breakout, and he could end up filling the Marc Methot to Erik Karlsson-esque role for one of those offensive defenseman that the Devils want to develop. A good #5 defensive defenseman with legitimate #4, PK specialist upside.
