MIKKO KOSKINEN - Goalie - 31 - $4.50MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2022-2023
LAST UPDATED 8/3/19
While Mikko Koskinen may be a capable NHL goaltender, right now he's seen as Edmonton's last surviving monument to former GM Peter Chiarelli's incompetence. Koskinen had some success for the Oilers after coming over from the KHL, and Chiarelli, sensing that his job was very much in peril, signed Koskinen to a large extension with a $4.5MM AAV, and was prompty fired within that week after his signing. So while Koskinen's elite size and strong command over his angles may make him a solid 1A option in the NHL, he'll never be given the benefit of the doubt by Oilers fans because he'll be a lasting memory of the trauma inflicted by Peter Chiarelli's utterly destructive tenure. I don't want to hijack Mikko Koskinen's report with a critique of Peter Chiarelli, but seeing how Mikko Koskinen's reputation was hijacked by Peter Chiarelli's need to save his job (or do a favor for an agent to gain more influence in his post-Edmonton career,) I feel that it's worth mentioning Koskinen's contract and the context it was signed in. Koskinen is a capable goalie. He's not elite, but he was stuck on a sinking ship in Edmonton and performed decently. In a vaccuum, is he worth $4.5MM per year? Probably not, but (term aside) is it a massive overpayment? Also no. It's a bad contract given its term and how unproven Koskinen was, but I trust a proven professional goalie like Koskinen is to be able to handle at the very least backup duty at the NHL level with a few spot starts. He's a fine 1A/1B, but also an everlasting memory of an era in Oilers history that fans would probably like to forget.
