MIKE SMITH - Goalie - 37 - $2MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 7/25/19
While Mike Smith has been one of the most consistently good goalies of the past decade of NHL hockey, his career looks like it's just about winding down. He struggled in his 40 starts in Calgary this past season, with a paltry -12.65 GSAA and a sub-.900 sv%. His athleticism, mental sharpness, and ability to square up to pucks has taken a hit with age, and the puck moving that once made him famous is now more risky than beneficial. I still think he can handle a Ryan Miller-type role as a veteran backup for a growing goaltender, but if he's asked to start 40 games again he'll struggle. He still has value, but at his age, it's only a matter of time before Smith is forced to hang them up after a long and successful career.
