MIKE GREEN - Defenseman - 33 - $5.375MM Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/4/19
While he may not be the elite point-per-game offensive juggernaut he was in his early 20's as a Capital, Mike Green, now in his early-to-mid 30's, is still a valuable offensive defenseman, although his advanced age seems to have caught up to him more recently. He's still a premium puck mover, with smooth, effortless skating abilities and great vision. He's one of the better transitional defensemen the NHL has seen post-lockout and is a massive help to Detroit's zone exit and zone entry efforts. Green plays an aggressive style with a very strong shot, but as a result he makes defensive mistakes. He's prone to getting caught when he's too aggressive on the rush or sometimes prone to turning the puck over when he tries a long range stretch pass. Those are the warts that come with Green playing the way he plays, but the value he brings in his puck moving outweighs the negative side effects. Age has caught up to Green, though, and the wear and tear his body has accumulated over a decade of NHL service has finally taken its toll. Green has not been healthy enough to play seventy games since 2016-17 and has onl played a full season once in his career, and that was during the final months of the Bush presidency. So durability has always been an issue for Green and it should continue to be an issue as he gets older. Green's isolated impact metrics are also quite ugly, indicating that there is a deeply troubling underlying impact to his game even when he is healthy. Still, though, he puts up points, so when he does manage to get into the lineup he should still figure to be a decent puck moving middle-pairing option who can jump-start your team's rushes.
