MIKAEL GRANLUND - Right Winger - 26 - $5.75MM Cap Hit - Cap Hit - UFA in 2020-2021
LAST UPDATED 8/20/19
After the 2017-18 season, Granlund looked like a budding superstar. He'd just posted two near-70 point campaigns and looked to be the potentially the best homegrown offensive talent Minnesota had ever seen in its franchise's history. Then came a tumultuous 2018-19 campaign, which saw Granlund (and the Wild in general) slump, and new GM Paul Fenton, desperate to acquire a player he drafted in Nashville, shipped Granlund to the Preds for Kevin Fiala, straight-up. This move is one of the major reasons why Fenton was fired, and Granlund wasn't even really a fit in Nashville, it's just that the Wild gave up on a player they had invested so heavily in for a player who they hope maybe could end up as the player Granlund is now. But questionable moves aside, Granlund is still a solid player, and is very much that budding superstar he looked like a year ago. Granlund is a fast skater with a great hockey brain. He pairs that skating ability with fantastic puck skills to buy himself time and space with the puck. He's a pass-first player who's capable of driving offensive play when he's on the ice, even though he's been shifted from a center to a winger in recent years. Defensively, Granlund is a very strong player, and for what he lacks in size he makes up in positioning skills and overall awareness. Granlund can kill penalties, score ~65 points a season, and drive play for a top line. He probably won't win an Art Ross, but he can be a top line player on a Stanley Cup winning team in the right fit.
